A few years ago when I first got into Postcrossing and postcard collecting, I remember the metered stamp machine instructing me to write 'AIR MAIL / PAR AVION' on the envelope or package. I don't think it ever made much of a difference. I never write AIR MAIL on anything anymore.

Air labels, or etiquettes, are standard-sized blue labels used by UPU member nations to denote airmail carriage. They are inscribed '~' (French for 'By Airmail'). The text usually includes the same message in the language of the native country.
